Canadians look to Scandinavia for lessons on district heating.

Rhén says Finland's rural communities, which used to have the same high jobless rates as Canada's forest towns, are reaping the rewards of bio-economy development. The trick, he says, is to focus wood energy development on rural communities with high unemployment and a need to diversify their local economies.

This could be a real win in housing developments in the US.
I'd love to see more stuff like this: 'Drake Landing Solar Community'

How in the world is biomass going to compete successfully with fossil fuels? The fossil fuel oligarchies own most of the government legislators and executives (revolving door, bribes), and are in co-hoots with the transportation moguls to keep fossil fuel prices low, despite the huge amount of subsidized environmental damage.

Good article, but fails to cite URLS to the plans and technology for wood pellet manufacture and for layout, construction and operation of district heating.

James - Mellow out. You can Google "wood pellet burners" and find a good half-dozen manufacturers here in the US. You'll also find links to companies that will truck the pellets to you directly (mind you to have space for a few tons of wood sitting around). You'll also find links to such district heating companies as mentioned in the article, but remember such large scale operations are now mainly in Europe. I believe there is one in Maine, but don't hold me to that.
Finally, realize there is nothing the big, bad oil companies can do to control these simple businesses. Like any other business, there are always risks involved but the smart business man calculates those risks within his framework before even breaking ground. Of course, it helps if you live in the NorthEast corridor where most of these companies are located (due to lumber mills, old-growth forests, paper mills, etc) but I believe there are folks in the Pacific NorthWest who can help you out as well.
Of course, if you live in Arizona and are bitching about this blog, well, you're just fucking nuts for wasting your time.
Now, mellow out before I take an axe handle to your lower intestines...

Being a specialist in heat networks in France (ABB IC Moller, ALSTOM Power, WANNIPIE, BRUGG tubes), and recognized by the design offices, operator etc. ..! I would be able to get in touch with officials in the development of heat networks in Canada, to put my skills to their services.
