Company agrees to buy Siemens 3.6-MW offshore wind turbines and Siemens plans an offshore wind office in Boston.
Boston, Unites States [RenewableEnergyWorld.com] Cape Wind announced an agreement with Siemens to supply 130 of its 3.6-megawatt (MW) turbines for America's first planned offshore wind farm off the coast of Massachusetts and, at the same time, Siemens also announced plans to open a U.S. Offshore Wind office in Boston.
This agreement between Cape Wind and Siemens represents a major step forward to jumpstarting the American offshore wind industry and increasing energy independence, creating a healthier environment while producing hundreds of green energy jobs."
-- Jim Gordon, Cape Wind President
Siemens says that its 3.6-MW offshore wind turbines are an industry ‘workhorse’ with 1,000 units sold and 150 units installed and successfully operating. Even though Cape Wind completed state and local permitting in 2008, it is still awaiting a final federal permitting decision from U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar who has recently stated he will make his decision by the end of April. The agreement to purchase turbines obviously hinges on his decision. Randy Zwirin, President and CEO of Siemens remarked that a favorable decision, “will signal to manufacturers and investors alike that the United States is a sustainability leader in its support for a clean, reliable energy supply and green jobs creation.” Zwirn also said that Siemens plans to open a Boston office on June 1, 2010, “allowing the company to be closer to its U.S. customers.” He praised the “forward thinking leadership of Governor Patrick and the Massachusetts Legislature” for their efforts to make the Commonwealth of Massachusetts a global leader in renewable energy development.
