With insolation levels of 6.0 - 7.0 kWh/Msq/day over 80% of the country, why isn't solar also key to Turkey's future power needs, in tandem with wind?

Has Turkey done any cost benefit analysis of building 20,000 MWs of intermittent windpower? Especially after the Danish debacle. The EU may soon be baling out Turkey, in addition to Greece.

Nigel, Turkey has already the largest number of solar water heater per inhabitant in the world (installed capacity per inhabitant), and this without any financial incentive. This helps Turkey to save millions on electricity and gas that would be used to heat this water.
Mike, Turkish public dept is only 48 % of GDP, far better compared to other EU countries (Greece 108%, UK 69%, FR 79%, Germany 77%), but you are right on the fact of doing a cost/benefit analysis on such an intermittent source of energy.

Windpower
1 MW = $1 million
20,000 MWs = $20 Billion

"...to install 48,000 MW of wind energy capacity which could produce 160 terrawatt-hours of electricity per year, twice the country's current electricity consumption."

Actually, for the year 2008, Turkey's Gross Electricity Demand is ~ 198 TWh, so the above statement is wrong...
