Solar can do it - compete with and beat out many other forms of energy. One company has the cost down to $3 per Watt (installed) and offers a great NO COST deal to taxpayers - applying Income tax benefits - No out-of-pocket expense - explained here: www.tnns.org/energy

There is an opportunity to add "control" to large solar power (PV at least) arrays:

If I could draw a picture of what I am thinking and submit it to this comments post it would be a single frame satire, like one might see on the inside front page of a major newspaper. Imagine a bedroom scene, a bed, a politician sitting up in bed with a sheepish grin on his face looking at the veiwer, the electric utilities to his left sitting up, arms crossed, looking to the side with a disgruntled look on her face, PV on his right looking somewhat innocent and oblivious asking, "so what do we do now?"
Its a real shame that PV had to fall into the same ruts, going round and around in circles just like any other wannabe infrastructuralist. PV had some real potential, once. It could have given the people as individuals a certian amount of personal independence. But it would seem that the race to make mega billions as fast as possible was more important. So it would seem to me that all of this talk of saving the enviroment and all is really just advertising. A way of getting people as a whole, to accept a higher priced electricity, Pity about Earth.

What about going off-grid and telling the utilities to shove it?
