Abengoa & JCI Installing Solar Thermal System at Colorado Prison

Published: February 8, 2010

Colorado, United States [RenewableEnergyWorld.com] Abengoa Solar Inc., under contract to Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI), is installing a turnkey solar hot water heating system at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) located in Englewood, Colorado. The solar system consists of 160 parabolic PT-1 collector modules comprising 22,720 square-feet of collector area situated on 1.7 acres of land area.

The solar system is scheduled to come on-line in April 2010.

The solar collectors are manufactured at ASI’s headquarters in Lakewood, Colorado in accordance with ISO 9001. The parabolic troughs track the sun continually during the day to focus light from the sun onto a receiver tube at the focal point of the parabola.

A mixture of water and anti-freeze is pumped through the absorber tube and transfers the heat and delivers it to a 15,000 gallon hot water storage tank.

The solar system is scheduled to come on-line in April 2010. During installation, Abengoa will draw heavily on the construction industry as well as suppliers of concrete, steel, plumbing and electrical equipment.
