Boston, Massachusetts — The top U.N. climate official says hacked e-mails from climate scientists that appear to cast doubt on their research do look bad.

Yvo de Boer says the e-mails did serious damage by fueling skepticism among those who believe the science is manipulated to exaggerate global warming.

The e-mails from scientists at the University of East Anglia indicating some data was not released to the public raised a serious issue that needs to be investigated.

The e-mails reported from the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit (CRU) could affect renewable energy votes in the Massachusetts legislature. Do you think we should start voting them out now. The conspiracy behind the Anthropogenic Global Warming myth has been suddenly turned into Climategate here in Massachusetts .

We hear stories of conspiracy, collusion in exaggerating warming data, possibly illegal destruction embarrassing information, organized resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data, private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more. The Massachusetts legislature is about to give the governor of Massachusetts more power! The governor has lost hundreds of millions of dollars through faulty renewable energy projects such as Evergreen Energy .One semi-quasi state agency,Massachusetts Technology Colaborative, has boutique bank accounts that the legislature has no control over in which funds are spent like a house of ill repute!

The latest is that Gov Patrick held back federal stimulus funds from cities and towns until he got a promise from your local politicians that they would vote for the Massachusetts Wind Energy Siting Reform Act . The governor has kept local fire and police departments without adequate funding in order to get the votes from the legislature this week .The funds are being given out to cities and towns this week as the legislature is about to pass the proposed Wind Energy Siting Reform Act .

The Wind Energy Siting Reform Act will strip local control over the siting of industrial wind power plants and associated roads and transmission lines. Under this Act, the state Energy Facilities Siting Board will have the power to forever alter the character and prosperity of our communities. The health of our environment and economy depend upon local control, and we oppose any effort by the state to override our community rights.

The beneficiaries of the Massachusetts Wind Energy Siting Reform Act are likely to be those citizens with disproportionate influence and power in the political process, including large corporations and development firms

Yes, when Americans are in Copenhagen looking at windmills, they should visit the geothermal technologies that they are allowing utility monopolies to block here. Please also look at the biomass you are also blocking!

As one of the founders of the MREA in WI said a while back on one of the GSHP diatribes, "Ground source heat pumps are an energy eficiency technology, not a renewable energy supply". The Ute's push it because they consume more electricity that solar collectors by far, and they require maintenance of some outsourced skilled type. The wells or trenches cost thousands to drill. It may be good if you have a hot spring in the back yard, but otherwise I'll take "Ol Sol" for the hot stuff.

Phil--you and the MREA founder don't understand GSHPs --they are often 100% solar thermal--via horizontal ground loops. Solar penetration of the earth's crust at mid latitudes is around 25 feet. GSHPs also can draw on ponds or rivers. Solar thermal is better, but often not doable on retrofits. Air source and GSHPs are 24/7 using the earth as the collector. I converted from oil to GSHP 4 years ago using an existing water well. The only big expense on the exterior was digging a large dry well to dump the well water because of the removal of 10 degrees F from the water. Here in the northeast we have a lot of old dense urban housing where the newer 12 month air source heat pumps are a good retrofit option. Number one here is energy efficiency upgrades of buildings, most are poor to mediocre. Most solar thermal here is going in for pool heating.

Re: Anonymous comment and politics

The timing of the release of the suspicious emails is a factor. That it hit the public news this week is another factor.

The science community is based on researched facts and healthy debate. Politics is politics and has more to do with who stands to benefit the most. Are we to suppose that the scientists involved with global warming have now become polititians? Maybe a few have.

Public news is rarely useful and is aimed at forming opinions in the uneducated who are not able to 1) Know that they need to separate fact from opinion 2) Know that they need to seek out thier own supporting data 3) form conclusions while removing all bias.

Got to go. I have to do something useful now.

Hi All:

Comments 4 & 6... You are splitting hairs.... at the least....
The only true solar (100%) systems from an operational perspective are:
Passive solar.
Active solar PV powered.
Active solar thermosyphoning, air or liquid.
Active swimming pool using only filter pump. (the pump runs anyway).
That's it, unless I forgot one...
All the rest is just a ratio of the energy moved compared to the energy it took to move it. I have an SAHP working (Solar Assisted Heat Pump) but not yet complete.... I don't call it solar or conventional... It is a blend of energy sources... some renewable.... some not...
Calling regular ground source heat pumps "solar" is a bit of a stretch... more radioactive decay really... stretching the use of the word solar that thin is like calling any house with a window solar... perhaps technically true but really inaccurate in keeping with practical definitions...
