David says: "Some sort of cap and trade for carbon is coming to the U.S" but it would seem to me that it won't fly here because the political reality is it is impossibly hard to work out the many problems involved. A simple tax on carbon moving from its sources to consumers makes it all so easy and we could use the money to reduce our federal deficits and we could put duties on imports coming from countries that don't tax carbon. So what if imports drop, shipping causes carbon emissions too. Lets keep our money here to use ourselves instead of sending it abroad to those who would do us harm economically or militarily.

Of course you are right that no one can tell with certainty that cap and trade will come to the US, I grant you. However, carbon taxes, which may or may not also be used, have considerable political baggage as well, and it would not be correct to say that "A simple tax on carbon... makes it all so easy...". It seems clear from positions that have already been staked out that the Congressional struggle over how to deal with climate change will leave a good deal of blood on the sand. I am considering writing further about cap and trade, carbon taxes, and Jim Hansen's "fee and dividend" proposal, so maybe you'll have another chance to catch more mistakes then...
