"In California, we are hoping that geothermal power can help the state become the first major world economy to back-out all of its coal. No other technology can do this as effectively as geothermal energy."

On the one hand, this is fantastic news. Compared to what has been allocated to this resource since the days of Jimmy Carter, this is huge.

On the other hand, $338 million is a drop in the bucket. The world's leading consumer of electricity is going to invest $ 1/3 billion to develop a domestic source of clean energy? How much do we spend every single day on imported sources of energy, and this is how much we want to spend to stimulate an American source of energy? It is almost comical.

Hello from NE Wisconsin:

There have been other articles that shed light on some of the projects that are underway or a description on how a process can retrieve heated water from oil wells, and recirculating the water. And, I would say that many of the geothermal generating plants have remained in the small production capacity region. (Maybe because of the lack of water where these facilities are located?)

I don't know about the ground source heat pumps. They seem to have gotten lots of money for the demonstration project funds. This smells as if someone got a free ground source heat pump to me. That's comparable to someone getting a free 100 kw wind turbine to me--and saying its a demonstration project.

This is a very encouraging move but what is lacking is really visionary work on producing geothermal energy on a grand scale. We need to think big and replace drilling with deep horizontal tunneling instead of drilling millions of tiny holes.
Geothermal is so much more promising than "clean coal" that it is a crime that we are still spending so much more just to keep the filthy coal business alive.

Here is an unfunded example: http://www.atlanticgeothermal.com/
