There was also a welcome for the announcement the day before the Congress opened of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Clinton Climate Initiative and the South African Ministry of Energy for support to examine the establishment of a 5000-MW Solar Park.

Eskom not only decides the energy fate of SA, but also has disproportionate influence over many neighboring countries' energy sectors, such as Mozambique, which is developing large-scale energy projects primarily to support big industry in SA. A new report (launched in conjunction w/ ISIS mtg) lays out a clean energy plan for Moz that would emphasize meeting the needs of its own citizens first, through market-ready renewables; see http://www.internationalrivers.org/node/4238

"Eskom observed that the top 135 customers account for 40% of total energy consumption; the largest 80,000 account for 75% of demand and the remaining 8 million use the final 25%. The larger customers, all industrial concerns, will not be affected by the rate rises, as they negotiate their own contracts."

So essentially, the poorest in the country (the remaining 8m consumers) will be subsidising the energy use of the richest industrial customers as well as paying for the capacity expansion programme, despite the fact that the people who will most benefit are those industrial customers. Nicely done Eskom! You learned your Friedmanite lessons well!

Kudos to Natasha! I missed that. Policies of Eskom look so similar to North America. And why would they differ?!

Thanks Anon!

The IMF effectively hobbled the new free SA from the day it started by forcing them to repay the debts of their oppressors (using the threat of 'international withdrawal of business' as they use everywhere) and to honour the pension plans of those oppressors. The utilities, mines, infrastructure, and pretty much any serious moneymaking enterprise remained in the hands of white South Africans (I'm white English BTW) while black South Africans were 'given' the land surrounding these enterprises. SA likes to make a lot of noise about the number of connections to electricity, telephones, and water since the election of the ANC, but the number of disconnections is far higher - because the owners of those utilities etc give preferential rates to their pals while milking those who can least afford it.

The IMF (now essentially the global HQ of the Chigaco school of Economics) has done this in pretty much every single country it has 'lent' money to. Who are the latest recipients of IMF money?....Why it's the US and the UK (and other recession hit countries) who needed to 'bail out' their banking sectors! Now in the UK we have been told we have to cut NHS services (paid for by public funding) or privatise! We have postal strikes due to threats to cut staff numbers and introduce mechanised systems (as a prelude to selling it) and other public services have already been privatised. Look forward to more redundancies and lowering of wages in the US! The IMF makes it so! Sorry this was off topic, but I'm very angry about this at the moment and this is simply another symptom of US economic policy being exported around the world DESPITE NOT WORKING EXCEPT FOR THE RICHEST 2% OF PEOPLE!!!!!!!! And the majority of Americans still support it despite the fact that THEY are the ones being oppressed by it!!

There are four kinds of solar power technical program of parabolic troughs, dish stirling engines, fresnel reflectors ,tower system in the present solar power market. The solar parabolic troughs power technology has already had 20 year commercialization operation experience and is the most matured technology with the large-scale commercialization promotion; the other three are in the commercialization promotion earlier period or are carrying on the commercialization operation earlier period.
Due to the advantage of fresnel reflectors power tecnhology ,it has obtained rapid development in recent years. Its generating cost compared to parabolic troughs approximately is lower 10%.
Due to the advantage of fresnel refectors power technology ,it has obtained rapid development.
The coated steel tube is applied to the compact Linear Fresnel power plant for the receiver and the solar air conditioner.
Our company has scale production capacity for coated steel tube, (maximum absorptance 95%,minimal emissivity 9%,keep stable in 300~350? ) and been installed in Spain and Australia (twenty years of proven reliability). We can also provide the AR-coating glass and the mirrors.
It's very nice to find cooperator and improve the development of the concentrating solar thermal power together.
