E.ON Climate & Renewables, Bionersis Forge CDM Partnership in Southeast Asia

Berlin, Germany [Power Engineering]

Bionersis and E.ON Climate & Renewables (EC&R), the division in charge of E.ON Group's global renewables and climate protection activities, have announced that they forge a partnership on Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in Southeast Asia.

It is expected to reduce climate harming methane emissions and therefore produce around 2 million CERs over the next ten years.

Under this partnership, Bionersis will install and operate methane recovery and flaring systems on landfill sites in various Asian countries, while EC&R will bring technical expertise in gas fired power generation. Profits from carbon credits (CERs) and energy revenues generated by the projects will be shared between Bionersis and EC&R.

Germany utility giant E.ON said the partnership would create a unique combination of EC&R's investment capacities and energy expertise with Bionersis' track record in originating, developing and operating CDM landfill gas projects. Several projects are currently under assessment in Southeast Asia and are expected to be jointly developed within the next 18 months.

The first project in the partnership between EC&R and Bionersis will be at Kamphaeng Saen in Thailand, one of the largest landfills in Southeast Asia. This is also the first project developed by Bionersis in the region.

It is expected to reduce climate harming methane emissions and therefore produce around 2 million CERs over the next ten years for a total investment exceeding €5 million [US $7.5 million]. The Kamphaeng Saen project has been registered now by UNFCCC.

"We are committed to developing a world class carbon sourcing business at E.ON Climate & Renewables. This partnership takes us another step closer to that goal." said Hervé Touati Managing Director of Carbon Sourcing, Emerging Technologies and New Markets at EC&R.

"With the project at Kamphaeng Saen set to produce good volumes of CERs and other projects potentially in the pipeline, we have found excellent partners in Bionersis".

Nicolas Heuzé, Chief Executive Officer of Bionersis said "We are very excited about this partnership which will enable us to accelerate our development in Asia, where we have already identified several large opportunities."
