AW-Energy Signs US $4.4M Wave Deal with EU

Helsinki, Finland [RenewableEnergyWorld.com] AW-Energy, a Finnish firm developing a wave energy technology brand named WaveRoller, has signed a US $4.4 million contract with the European Union to demonstrate its technology. Ocean energy technology represents the largest untapped business potential within the renewables sector.

The nominal capacity of the WaveRoller unit is 300 kW and the project includes a one-year testing period.

The contract between AW-Energy and the EU is the first one under the CALL FP7 - Demonstration of the innovative full size systems. Several leading wave energy companies participated to the CALL. The contract includes a grant agreement, providing significant support to the demonstration project.

The goal of the project is to manufacture and deploy the first grid-connected WaveRoller unit in the Portuguese waters. The exact installation site is located near the town of Peniche, which is also known as "Capital of the Waves". The nominal capacity of the WaveRoller unit is 300 kW and the project includes a one-year testing period.

The consortium led by AW-Energy includes companies from Finland, Portugal, Germany and Belgium. Industrial heavy weights like Bosch-Rexroth and ABB, together with renewable energy operator Eneolica and wave energy specialist Wave Energy Center, are delivering their best know-how to ensure successful implementation of the project.

Elliptical motion of waves in the ocean that are rocking the water will pave,
By panels now flapping the forces are acting converting wave action below,
To useable power, electrical shower, the testing is needed to show.

It never ceases to amaze me that all these august engineering companies involved actually believe that putting a wave energy converter on the seabed in shallow water is a good idea! What is truly amazing is that millions of Euros are being squandered on this, and similar devices that will, at best, produce electricity with a capacity factor of just 25%.

The main problem is that the best waves are pelagic and are therefore well out of reach of vulnerable seabed cables. Mobile wave energy converters are the answer.
