Wind Project in Finnish Lapland Planned

Finland [RenewableEnergyWorld.com]

Fortum and Metsähallitus have jointly begun developing a wind power project in the Kuolavaara-Keulakkopää area of northern Finland.

According to initial estimates, approximately 18 wind power stations of 2–3 MW each can be built in Kuolavaara-Keulakkopää, producing between 100 and 120 GWh of electricity annually. The production would equal 40% of the total electricity consumption of the Kittilä and Sodankylä municipalities.

During the autumn, the project’s environmental impact assessment (EIA) will commence, wind measurements will be set in motion and technical pre-planning will continue. If the project proves to be feasible in further investigations and if the necessary permissions are granted, wind power production could start in Kuolavaara-Keulakkopää around 2013.

Located in the Kittilä and Sodankylä municipalities, the area has been marked as a wind power area in the draft regional land use plan of Mountain Lapland and in the regional land use plan of Northern Lapland.

In related news, Fortum and Nordisk Vindkraft have signed an agreement giving Fortum responsibility for the operation, monitoring and maintenance of the grid for Havsnäs Wind Farm, built and operated by Nordisk Vindkraft. The contracts are for three years.

Havsnäs Wind Farm, located near Stromsund, is Sweden’s largest onshore wind farm with 48 turbines and a capacity of 95 MW.
