Wind development company wpd has applied for a construction permit for what will be Scandinavia's largest offshore wind park, the 1.5 GW Finngrunden project.
"In 11 years, Sweden's energy consumption will consist of 49% renewable energy and makes it difficult to meet this goal without offshore wind power."
-- Charlotte Bergqvist, CEO, wpd
The project's scope will include 300 wind turbines of 5 MW capacity, a combined power of 1500 MW. The wind park is to be located in a large area about 40 kilometers from the mainland, east of Gävle. Annual production is expected to be around 5.5 TWh.
If permission is granted the construction phase of the wind park is expected to start in the year. 2014.
The development has the opportunity to provide two million people with electricity and demonstrates that there are good geographical positions to carry out large-scale development of offshore wind energy in Sweden, says wpd project manager Hans Ohlsson.
“In 11 years, Sweden's energy consumption will consist of 49% renewable energy and makes it difficult to meet this goal without offshore wind power,” added wpd CEO, Charlotte Bergqvist.
