As far as we know, controlling a power station like this by a cell phone is a "world's first."

Good to see articles on hydro - it is, after all, carrying the most load in the current renewables marketplace and it still has more upside potential. As the article states a common sense balance from the environmentalists in getting hydro projects licensed (a burden and expense that other renewables don't have) will make hydro more feasible and benefit the enviornment as well. No one wants more coal.

I'm negotiating a similar restoration for a Maine Water District; we are just at the early stages of figuring out whether it's 'worthwhile'.

Luckily, the original manuf. of the turbines is STILL IN BUSINESS and is organized to do site assessments and provide a to z service on removing, possibly refurbishing usable components, and then reinstalling a replacement set of turbines and generators.

What a relief to find a 'one -stop' vendor!

Another focus will be a historical restoration of the rather quaint generator house.

If everything goes right, I will write it up and submit it as a case study in both the 'politics' of small hydro restoration, but in the technical details....I like the automated trash racks and invasive species filters, but we can't afford everything; others want a fish way, but this is a big dam in a series of three or four dams...I suggested stocking flying fish, but some people only want all the dams down!

Great to see good old Kiwi ingenuity, an amazing country for being inventive and thinking outside the square.
Pity that like all governments the bureaucrats dictate the parameters of being able to revitalise old systems and usually put immense barriers in the way of being able to do the same.
Instead of promoting revitalisation bureaucracy impedes it by their stupidity.

What a pleasant surprise. Not another article with a lot of hot air about Renewable Energy, but an article about real people that actually went out and did something to make Renewable Energy work.
