CEZ Secures GE Turbines For Romanian Project

Prague, Czech Republic [RenewableEnergyWorld.com] CEZ Group has signed a contract with General Electric for the supply of wind turbines to be installed on the 252.5 MW Cogealac phase of a wind farm project in Dobrogea, Romania.

Under the terms of the contract GE Energy will supply 101 of its 2.5 xl turbines of 2.5 MW each as well as installation, startup, commissioning and also maintenance services.
Maintenance services will be managed from a service station GE is currently building close to the wind farm.

CEZ Group is building the largest onshore wind farm in Europe, with a total capacity of 600 MW. The first stage of the Project (Fantanele) will be finalized during the first part of 2010, and the second stage (Cogealac) is expected to be implemented in 2011.

The total investment of the CEZ Group in the project will reach €1.1 billion, the company says.

What are you doing? Have you done any cost-benefit analysis of this intermittent energy resource? Companies add windpower only because governments continue to fail internalize the lower value of windpower's intermittency into the power market, even after the Danish Debacle. The July 2009 issue of Power Engineering indicates windpower increases generation costs by more than twice, while reducing greenhouse gases by a mere 11 percent, mostly because it must be inefficiently backed up by natural gas. (In comparison, other lower-cost and more reliable renewable energies like small-hydropower, geothermal and biomass cogeneration could reduce greenhouse gases by nearly 100% at very low costs.)
