Not to sound like a downer, and yes we have to start somewhere, but this is paltry news, at best. Right, the USA gov't is bailing out banks and other corporations by the billions/trillions, but can only muster-up a pitiful pittance for RE R&D. Some perspective...

S. Korea is a nation of ~48mil. Here in the USA we're now a pop. of just over 300mil. S.Korea's gov't is earmarking $84bn to improve energy efficiency--JUST energy efficiency. Yet our gov't is ONLY forkin' over $66bn for all RE technologies over a five year period.

South Korea to spend billions on energy efficiency

Right, from feasibility studies I have read, it's going to cost ~$8-$9bn to implement a high-speed rail line between LA and the SF Bay Area. Do the math...

John - I don't think that's right. Research has been going on for 6 and 8 hours of storage. So this will be an advancement.

The emphasis on "utility scale" is saddening. Why not emphasize technologies deployable by individual property owners, so as to promote consumer responsibility?

Conservation ("Demand Side Management") happens automatically when people take responsibility for providing heat and power for their own buildings. A return to the old American self-reliance theme just might help us recover from thoughtless consumerism, no?

Isn't installing a solar thermal water heater preferable to having the utility company switch off your water heater remotely? This form of Demand Side Management is already in use in Fort Collins, Colorado--one of the above-mentioned government grant sites. That's a little too "smart" at the utility level and dumb at the consumer level for my taste......

WAKE UP anonymous... you honestly don't know the true cost of Coal Burning
What about cleaning up the mess of 75yrs of burning this pure carbon..
lets clean all the mercury out of the Fish as well as the Atmosphere,
lets put back the mountain tops in West Virginia back to the way they were, pristine and clean...What are they now and what would the true cost be of just these 2
clean ups.....So before you make such statements take in to consideration the true COST......

John, you are incorrect. The firms working on energy storage for dark sky operations are not at 24-7 yet. Plus, the safety & economics are not all that attractive. Tens of thousands of tons of molten salts are needed because they only go up to 1050°F before they dissociate, and below 500°F they are at risk of re-solidification. This is truly a limited energy storage medium. Hope nobody is around when the first such storage tank ruptures. That would be a nasty death. We need to do something and the DOE is finally beating around the right bushes.

I recall reading articles about advancements in collection from 750ºF to over 1000ºF that allow molten salt heat storage to operate the plant throughout the night.
