SkyFuel to Install SkyTrough Collectors at Cogentrix Facility

SkyFuel Inc. has signed an agreement with Sunray Energy Inc. for the installation of SkyTrough collectors at Sunray's 43-megawatt (MW) parabolic trough generating plant near Daggett, California, formerly known as Solar Energy Generation Systems I and II.

The SkyTrough installation is to be operational later this year. No business terms were disclosed.

The agreement with Sunray Energy, allows for the first commercial installation of the SkyTrough, an advanced parabolic trough concentrator, which uses glass-free ReflecTech Mirror Film reflectors. The agreement allows SkyFuel to integrate an array of SkyTrough solar collector assemblies into the Sunray plant to demonstrate their commercial viability in a full-scale, solar generating plant application.

“This deployment is the next step in our process to verify the low cost and high performance of the SkyTrough a process that began in 2008 with design and component testing, continues with independent testing by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories, and since March of this year also includes testing of the heat transfer fluid loop at our Colorado R&D Center. Now the SkyTroughTM takes the next step with integration into a commercial power plan,” said Dr. Arnold Leitner, SkyFuel's founder and CEO.

The SkyTrough installation is to be operational later this year. No business terms were disclosed.

Eventually something like this has got to work. When it does, it can become the model for similar facilities around the globe, in areas with lots of high-incidence sunshine. If this can work as far north as the southern U.S., it should be able to work even better closer to the equator.

As I understand it, this already works well -- SkyTrough is the next-generation parabolic trough with a larger solar collector area and less expensive parts, which makes parabolic trough solar plants easier to build and more competitive economically.
