IRENA - Key Decisions to be Made in Egypt Next Week

London, UK [RenewableEnergyWorld.com]

Next week will see key decisions being made regarding the development of the new global renewable energy body, IRENA (the International Renewable Energy Agency), when the second meeting of the Preparatory Commission takes place in Egypt's Sharm El-Sheik.

Germany, Austria, Denmark, and the United Arab Emirates are all offering to host the agency

Representatives from IRENA’s 88 member countries will come together to vote on the location of the IRENA headquarters, and on the selection of the new Director General.

There are four proposed locations, with Germany, Austria, Denmark, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) all offering to host the agency.

Likewise, there are four candidates for the position of Director General, all of them from Europe:

From France, Helene Pelosse - currently Deputy Head of Staff in charge of international affairs in the Private Office of the Minister of State. Spanish candidate, Juan Ormazabal Jordana, is currently the Director General of the Centro Nacional de Energías Renovables (CENER).

Professor Arthouros Zervos of Greece is a Faculty Member at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the National Technical University of Athens and President of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC). His candidature is being strongly supported by EREC and many renewable industry associations.

The fourth candidate is Hans Jorgen Koch of Denmark, who currently serves as the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Climate and Energy of the Danish Energy Agency.

Editor's note: RenewableEnergyWorld.com and Renewable Energy World magazine take no position on which candidate should be elected to the position of Director General.
