Solar in Paradise: Remote PV Systems Offer Power in the Pacific

In late 2008 and early 2009 an EU-funded programme added a new feature to the Micronesian landscape – nearly one thousand solar PV modules.

For folks in remote island like this, grid parity means nothing.

This is a phenominal, much-needed project and I applaud all involved. An extension of this project could be in the way of portable solar generators such as we manufacture, providing 2 kW each using a marine-grade absorbed glass mat battery without needing to tie to the larger system.

Many of the pacific islands sit smack in the middle of the trade wind zone. Could you have a more reliable, even source of wind for wind turbines. Some high tropical islands (Samoa comes to mind) have a low level of peak solar hours so wind may be the preferable option.

Solar in paradise should not really stop at sing PV power for electricity generation only. Especially if salt water intrusion is a growing problem then PV or small (vertical) wind powered desalination or even PV powered waste water treatment combined with ground water recharge should be looked into
