So, what part of this new decade can we expect to see solar panels made of these carbon nanotubes? A small one outside your house, in your yard, should be enough to power your house.

Concentrating the solar energy from a four-micrometer diameter receptor to a core of semiconducting material does not seem particularly useful. Am I missing something?

From a physics point this is interesting, this is one of the less prctical ideas around. Instead of using a cheap Fresnel lens at about $80/m^2 to $50/M^2 which can focus the sun easily up to 1000X, they are using carbon nanotubes which which range fro $50 to $900 per gram!!

If you want concentration, there are already established players like Sol Focus (www.solfocus.som), Amonix (www.amonix.com) and developing technologies like the Rianbow Concentrator by Sol Solution (www.sol-solution.net).

I hope this group is better at physics than they are at
explaining why this device difffers from other light focusing
devices. It can't be because the tubes intercept more light photons,
given their small collection area, so there must be something
in the way they direct those photons and move them to the semi.
They clearly didn't explain what mechanism, if it exists,
does that. Am I imagining things, or does MIT seem to now be in the business of announcing "breakthroughs" (that aren't) every other day?
