Sunovia & EPIR Net US $9M Award to Commercialize CdTe Solar

Florida, United States [RenewableEnergyWorld.com] Sunovia Energy Technologies Inc. and EPIR Technologies Inc. have received a US $9 million Defense Department SBIR Phase III contract that allows for the expansion of production capacities and capabilities of the companies' cadmium telluride on silicon (CdTe/Si) manufacturing program.
The partners are currently under contract to install 20 megawatts (MW) of solar energy capacity at the Cibernetique Parque in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic using this technology.
After more than ten years of research and development, Sunovia and EPIR have achieved the successful commercialization of CdTe/Si wafers in other markets. Most of this research was funded by the Department of Defense. These wafers reduce the cost of infrared cameras for the U.S. military. This technology is now being adapted for the solar markets, and the companies said that they are ahead of schedule in delivering solar cells that could be produced at about one-fifth the cost of today's high-efficiency solar cells. Sunovia and EPIR are currently under contract to install 20 megawatts (MW) of solar energy capacity at the Cibernetique Parque in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic using this technology.
