Evergreen Solar PV Panels Power EV Recharging Station in Germany

Massachusetts, United States [RenewableEnergyWorld.com]

Evergreen Solar Inc. announced that its panels are being used to provide the electricity for a new electric vehicle battery recharging station in a high-traffic area in Frankfurt, Germany. The solar "fuel" station provides free battery charging for small-scale electric vehicles including Velotaxis, Segways, electric bikes and scooters.

"As a company that produces solar panels delivering the most electricity with the smallest carbon footprint, we feel a project like this one is very much in line with our brand and our overall mission."

-- Peter Rusch, Director - Marketing & Sales for Europe, Evergreen Solar

The station contains six charging ports all of which receive their power from the Evergreen Solar panels located on the building’s roof. The installation is located in a major shopping district allowing people to power their vehicles while they shop. On a summer day the station will produce approximately 21 kilowatt-hours of electricity and enough annually to power 115,000 kilometers of travel for the average e-scooter. The cost of the installation was €65,000 [US $85,229].

“This new solar ‘fuel’ station will serve as a model for the transportation industry and is a major step forward in helping promote environmentally-friendly transportation,” said Peter Rusch, Evergreen Solar’s director of marketing and sales for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “As a company that produces solar panels delivering the most electricity with the smallest carbon footprint, we feel a project like this one is very much in line with our brand and our overall mission.”

This is an excellent way of cooperating & working towards a common cause of promoting Green travel. This could be extended as an employment option as well. Sponsors / Governament subsidies for such Solar installations is the way forward to carry the EV Recharge stations in urban areas.

What is interesting is the recharge is free of cost. Any details on the recharge time required for the vehicles, who is funding the project cost ?.

Like the parking fees the commercial establishment can waive off the recharge fees against the purchases made by the customer at their store as another option

PTC tax credit or Feed-In Tariff probably greatly offsets cost of financing such an installation. per the artical - only 5 plug-ins are present in this Proof of Concept.
21 KWe /day, I beleive, is about a 4kw system since the article stated "on a sunny day" it may even be less then that. So $85,000 U.S. divided by 4,000 watts = roughly $21/watt installed.... UM the question should be How can it cost so much.

I agree with Natalie - that's at least 30 years payback even with feed-in tariff. But it should encourage people to use personal electric vehicles to shop with. A bigger car park would probably have cost more.
