Modern wood energy may soon take its place alongside wind and solar as a non-competitive environmental energy investment of choice. A newly published analysis in the March 13 issue of the journal Science explains social, environmental and economic benefits of sustainably implemented Advanced Wood Combustion (AWC) energy projects. Mainstream acknowledgement, with publication by editors at Science, that wood can be a clean energy source for conventional American buildings is revolutionary news in the U.S. Affordable clean energy is one contribution offered by AWC, others are climate change mitigation and protection for wildfire-prone communities across the nation.

"Wood Energy in America," written by a multi-institutional team of ecologists, engineers, forest conservationists and energy specialists appears in the "Policy Forum" section of the journal. (http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/summary/323/5920/1432) Dan Richter of Duke University and five collaborating authors based the article on observations of energy and forest sites in Austria made during a tour, organized by Resource Professionals Group collaborating with Austrian public and business leaders and Penn State's School of Forest Resources. Help came from the U.S. Forest Service and USDA Foreign Agriculture Service. Fifteen energy, forestry, and policy professionals made the trip. Advanced Wood Combustion, the report says:

• Offers clean low cost heat/cooling for any sized community
• Eliminates noxious smoke
• Does for heat and cooling what wind and PV do for electricity
• Supports forest restoration
• Adds markets for damaged and low quality trees
• Is twice as efficient as typical electricity plants
• Stimulates sustainable energy, permanent green job growth

Austrian policy led to rapid sustainable growth of all renewables. We can save time by applying lessons they already learned.
