Irish Firm Claims World's Most Efficient Solar Hot Water Panel

County Mayo, Ireland [RenewableEnergyWorld.com]

An Irish company has launched what could be the most efficient solar hot water panel ever produced. Surface Power in County Mayo says it plans to create 20 new jobs over the next 12 months with the launch and international distribution of its new product.

" We received over 400 enquiries from the USA alone last month after the specifications were released during the Christmas period."

--John Quinn, Founder, Surface Power

Independent certification by TUV Rhineland has shown that when compared to other solar hot water panels the Surface developed panel was in one case as much as 131% more efficient in morning and evening time and 76% more efficient at midday.

Surface Power estimates that the product, which has undergone six years of development and testing, has the potential to reduce domestic and commercial hot water bills by up to 70% if insulation standards meet new building regulations.

“The market for the solar collector was worth in excess of one billion dollars  in 2008 and has grown by 300% since 1998. We received over 400 enquiries from the USA alone last month after the specifications were released during the Christmas period. We also expect the international home renovation market to be very strong during the next three years, as our collector is the only pre-packaged vacuum collector on the world market. This leads to quicker, simpler and cheaper installations,” said John Quinn, Surface's founder.

We have a B&B in W. Waterford at about 52.8.5 North (07.53.10W).
We installed a 30 tube evacuated tube system (on the ground to avoid pumps and other costs/probs) including transport it cost less than €1300
I fitted it myself (12hrs) and so couldn't get the grant. I believe we got the cost back within the first year. A system like above would make me wonder what kind of idiot would still talk down the idea of retrofitting a panel.
It's 11am on a cold but sunny morning and the pipes to the system are too hot to hold at the point they exit the hot-tank.

I have had a number of people with Flat Plate collectors that they had installed in the North East USA and they were not happy with their performance during colder winter months, a simple fix we found was to add a set of EVT's in front of the flat plates; that allows the heat from the header to pre heat the panels that are affected by ambient air temps. A very simple fix. @41Deg. North with air at 20 deg.Fht. during AM start up. www.usasolarstore.com

Have this company develop a subsidiary in the U.S. with good, capable marketing and solid array of distributors. Their array of components would be terrific for individuals and developers seeking integrated, off-grid capability. This looks like a well-conceived company with good leadership...something refreshing and badly-needed today.

It would be nice to see a photo of this product; a short video clip would be even better. New break-throus on the horizon!

This I've got to see, Sundwel Solar have been manufacturing solar collectors for over 30 years and our world class 'Atlas' collectors already supply around 70% of domestic hot water bills, and these panels are going to be 131% better? I've heard some outrageous claims over the years but this takes the biscuit, a good way to drum up enquiries though.
