8 MW of Solar PV Inaugurated in Spain

Biel, Switzerland [RenewableEnergyWorld.com] Spanish company Vasolar 2006 S.L. and its Portuguese business partner Cavalum SGPS, S.A. announced that they have inaugurated four solar parks delivering a total output of 8 megawatts in Extremadura, Spain. The tracking systems have the potential to produce a total of 26 gigawatt-hours of energy per year on average.

Valsolar and Cavalum have therefore divided the four solar parks into smaller systems, each with an output of 100 kilowatts.

Valsolar and Cavalum are set to receive the higher Spanish feed-in tariff guaranteed by royal decree RD 661/2007 for solar installations commissioned before the end of September. The decree guarantees a higher payment for installations of up to 100 kilowatts.

Valsolar and Cavalum have therefore divided the four solar parks into smaller systems, each with an output of 100 kilowatts. They receive €0.4551 [US $0.665] for each kilowatt-hour fed into the grid. The four solar parks represent a total cost of €40 million [US $58.45 million]. Valsolar said that it expects a payback period of approximately 10 years.

Valsolar and Cavalum chose to install Sputnik Engineering’s 100-kilowatt central inverters for the projects. In 2008 alone the company has so far installed 70 SolarMax inverters.

I would consider a twenty cent (US) feed in rate to be generous but I don't know what electricity costs are in Spain.

That the project was divided into 100Kw segments to manipulate (abuse?) the "royal" system does not surprise me. I am surprised the authorities allowed it. Any math types who can tell me if that requires 8,000 inverters (I have come to doubt my own math)? Perhaps if they had to set up 8,000 entities to claim the tariff it would have made more sense to accept a lower one.

$7M/Mw - and that is when conditions are optimal. Simply amazing.

Not 8000 inverters. 8 MW = 8,000 KW. Since each inverter is 100 KW, they will only need 80 inverters.

I could go on a lark about working for 'the everyman', the people used by organizations to profit in the name of good deeds - but I'm not nearly that clever.

I am just a person who has, over the years, learned that when someone is giving you nothing but good news they are probably holding something back.

Sadly, there are too many who accept things at face value, then the rest of us get to bail them out.
