SunPower To Build 25-MW of Solar for FPL

San Jose, United States [RenewableEnergyWorld.com] SunPower Corporation announced that it has been selected by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to build one of the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants in the United States and a second power plant at the Kennedy Space Center. The installations will include a 25-megawatt (MW) power plant in DeSoto County, Florida and a 10-MW project at the Kennedy Space Center.

"With these agreements totaling approximately 35 megawatts, we applaud Florida Power & Light's commitment and leadership in renewable energy."

SunPower will design and build the facilities and FPL will own, operate and maintain the systems. The DeSoto plant will be completed in 2009. The plant at the Kennedy Space Center will be completed in 2010. Construction is contingent on approval of the Florida Public Service Commission.

we'd need the final installed cost and the actual annual output to figure that cost.

The news to build solar power plant for electricity generation is very encouraging. I hope with technology improvement and more units the cost of build up of new solar power plants will come down so that not only the rich countries but also the developing countries will also benefited having high intensity of sun ray all the year round. What would be the unit cost of electricity generation from solar compared to conventional source like natural gas or renewable source like wind energy when production starts in 2009.

Nobody thinks of the environment before a change is made, only after. If they did, there probably would not be a problem such as global warmining. Has anyone giving a thought to the impact of covering square miles of land with solar cells? Why not make it madatory that any existing or new structure be covered with solar cell shingles? Then we could, as the old saying goes,"have our cake and eat it, too"!
