Noble Breaks Ground On 351-MW of Wind in New York State

New York, United States [RenewableEnergyWorld.com] Noble Environmental Power, a leading wind energy developer, announced that it will break ground this week on New York State's four newest windparks. Combined, the windparks located in Clinton, Franklin and Wyoming counties will be capable of generating 351 megawatts (MW) of energy using 234 General Electric 1.5-MW wind turbines.

"Each of these windparks marks another step toward a clean energy future for New York, and each windpark will help strengthen the upstate economy by creating jobs and bringing income to the local communities."

In addition, the projects represent a US $702 million investment in renewable energy that will provide an estimated total of US $305 million in new revenue to the local host communities over the next 20 years.

"Each of these windparks marks another step toward a clean energy future for New York, and each windpark will help strengthen the upstate economy by creating jobs and bringing income to the local communities."

The four new windparks include:

Noble Altona Windpark (Clinton County)
      - 65 turbines, 97.5 MW
      - Enough power for 32,500 average homes
      - US $75 million in local economic benefits

Noble Chateaugay Windpark and the Noble Bellmont Windpark (Franklin County)
      - Combined, 85 turbines and 127.5 MW
      - Enough power for 42,500 average homes
      - US $153 million in local economic benefits

Noble Wethersfield Windpark (Wyoming County)
      - 84 turbines, 126 MW
      - Enough power for 42,000 average homes
      - US $77.5 million in local economic benefits

WY exports wind energy to CO. With the NG boom WY's population is now over 500K.

I had heard that the Wyoming and Idaho wind areas didn't have enough infrastructure to export the power out of state.

The states have low population, WY is under a half million isn't it? So prior to Wind there wasn't much need for a large grid. These 3 projects would supply nearly every house in the state and then some.

Rough estimates:
1000 house per MW x 361= 351,000 house holds with 3 people per house that's enough power for over a million people.

It's Wyoming County, in upstate NY (think "Attica"). The article says the $305 million is the "local economic benefit". It probably represents taxes and PILOTs paid by the company, sales tax on employees' purchases and grants and contribution to local organizations. It doesn't represent revenue. As best I can figure, the local economic benefit represents about 1.5 cents per kWh generated.

I hope this sentence:

"$305 million in new revenue to the local host communities over the next 20 years"

actually meant to use the word 'income' instead of 'revenue'. Even if it was income, that's a pretty horrible 20 year return considering the initial investment was $702 million.
