Nexans To Install Submarine Cable for Offshore Wind

Paris, France [RenewableEnergyWorld.com] Cable company Nexans has been awarded a contract by StatoilHydro ASA to supply the submarine cables for the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm project, located around 20 kilometer (km) offshore from Sheringham, on England's north Norfolk coast. The contract scope includes engineering, procurement and construction of two 22km, 145 kilovolt (kV) XLPE submarine export cables, and a spare cable with associated equipment. An optical fiber cable will also be included.

The total installed generation capacity will be 315 MW and, in an average year, approximately 1.1 terrawatt-hours of power will be exported to the mainland through the two submarine export cables.

The Sheringham Shoal wind farm is located in water averaging 20 meters and will be developed with 88 wind turbine generators rated at 3.6 megawatts (MW) each. The total installed generation capacity will be 315 MW and, in an average year, approximately 1.1 terrawatt-hours of power will be exported to the mainland through Nexans' two cables, which will be connected to the regional distribution network at Salle substation.

Completion and production start-up of the wind farm is planned for 3rd quarter 2011. The full execution of the cable contract, worth an estimated €24 million [US $37 million], is subject to consents.

I believe the figures included cover only the cost of the CABLE contract. Thus, 3 cables (one of which is a spare) and the fiber optics one.

That figure sounds too cheap; only $117,000 per MW installed.
A land based turbine is over a million$ per installed MW.
