Including all these markets, an estimated $71 billion was invested in new renewable power and heating capacity worldwide in 2007 (excluding large hydropower), of which 47 percent was for wind power and 30 percent was for solar PV.

I think that more residences may be able to go off grid or use less grid power in the future. Technological problems are holding things up. We need less costly PV generation and we need more cost effective storage batteries. We already have the technology but the price is too high for most home owners to transition right now.

adrianakau2aol.com

Great article. However, one of the greatly understated renewable/sustainable technologies that is readily accessible to the general public continues to be "Near Surface" geothermal. While this article does briefly mention groundsource heat pumps, the concept of highly efficient earth-coupled heating and cooling source for small residential through large commercial/industrial buildings remains largely misunderstood and sometimes maligned.

Other sustainable power/energy technologies not withstanding: Wind and PV Solar are costly and dependant on the weather and are susceptible to extreme weather damage-(as with solar heat); Biofuels reduce our dependancy on fossil fuels, but fails to address reduction in CO2; most other emerging technologies have a ways to go to be viable.

Are there insurance companies that provide damage cover for roof top solar panels.

Higher energy prices will result in both demand destruction (conservation), and a more aggressive search for newer technologies and applications. Americans won't save anything that's cheap, and since most energy is "brown-sourced", this alone will help to green the environment. As always, the funding problem remains that investors want "in" on the second project, but not the first.

Solar hot water is already sensible financially, but remains stuck in the solar backwater(pardon that), while consumers rushed out to purchase hot tubs. High oil and natural gas prices are about to change all that. Who knows? Maybe they'll actually be able to fill 'em now....

Would be great to have an articles showing the Cost of 1KW of today's available energies.
