I thought Germany was still building coal plants. What will they replace them with... natural gas?

CIGS technology is now entering the market. Nanosolar is already shipping out panels and Johanna Solar Technology will be producing them shortly. CIGS should help alleviate the silicon bottle neck and also permit second stage investment in a product that brings down the cost per Kwh to a level that will be appreciated by business as well as home owners.

CIGS is just one of many promising clean technologies that will make inexpensive power available without harmful side effects. Everyone knows that even coal will not last forever and that the destructive processs of extraction and burning it should be decreased as quickly as is humanly possible.

    adrianakau2aol.com

I have been a fan of Worldwatch Institute since its inception. But I must say that if we wait for the political will to make these changes, it may be too late. The way the world works is the old "king of the hill" technologies (i.e. railroads, petroleum energy systems), are defeated by upstart technologies (automobiles, ([solar energy systems?]) that give the customer what they want at a price they can afford. Solar is already affordable, it is just not packaged efficiently. It is not the politicians we are waiting on, it is the intelligent financiers!! The Henry Ford of solar energy is awaiting the financial means to mass produce the right product!

http://lightontheearth.blogspot.com/

I sent copies of the Scientific American article "a Grand Plan for Solar" to my Congressional Senators and Reps. Oregon will see the light. Why don't the rest of you do that? Lets get the ball rolling!

I don't see Dr. Ron Paul's name in the list of recipients from Mr Cole. When we talk about a new energy cosciousness we probably need a new political model. Our interjection in the Middle East looking for oil for the rich; could have funded renewables, education, health care and social security. The tipping point will come when the common man builds a zero energy type home in lieu of dependence on your local utility.

Whatever happens to us humans here on Earth, what ever we dicide to do or not to do is of no consequence to the Earth. The Earth will correct itself or extinguish. What if nothing is done what will the end results be? Perhaps global warming would create a critical desalination of the Earths oceans causing in turn a global climate shift creating another "ice age" and billions of humans will die. Perhaps the Earths magnetosphere will weaken and allow severe solar radiation to "sand blast" the atmosphere into oblivion. The Earth will correct itself or extinguish. 6.5 billion homosapiens are of little consequence to Earth. To this seemingly endless universe, one little "goldie locks" planet is of little or no consequence, let alone the little fury creatures scurrying around on it. Pity about Earth.

I know you all support the accepted wisdom that the global warming we observe is anthropogenic. I know, I know since so many people say it is so, it must be so. Just a thought though. The sceptics think it may be natural and a sub set of the set of sceptics suspect that the solar cycle has more influence on global warming than humans. This may be about to be tested so watch this space. We are just now at a sun spot minimum with the beginning of the next cycle just announced. In addition, the 11 year cycle is lengthening. These have been associated in the past with cooling. It is just possible that we may see a few decades of cooling. Or not.

http://mtkass.blogspot.com/2007/07/global-warming-anthropogenic-or-not.html

PAG cont.

We can begin correcting the course of catastrophe by removing from office most of incumbent Washington in the approaching elections. The GOP has shown they haven't a clue (Gov. Richardson excepted). The two Dem. candidates have a slight clue -- they can enunciate the word "renewable" on the hustings, but don't seem to have a concrete platform to offer. Mr. Obama's renewable energy policy resembles a wad of cotton candy -- a cloud of fluff, sugar and primary colour, but little substance. Perhaps children will buy it. Mrs. Clinton can pronounce the "renewable" word and admits to its necessity, but seems to go no further in proposal.

Our impediments lie not in the technology nor the oeconomics of renewables but in ignorance in High Places. Let us begin by renewing Washington -- retire as much of the Republican deadwood as possible, ditto the Dems., and by holding Hillary's and Barack's feet to the fire until something ignites in them.

Thank you, Mr. Schmidt for the wise reminder. Or, as the late Ayatollah Khomeini (by your leave) was wont to say, "Man and all his glories is not worth so much as a goat-sneeze."

Man is a mote, a mite, a matter of small consequence riding an anonymous particle among millions of similar. We can abuse the hospitality of our small particle and gormandize the legacy of our children -- we may then find ourselves and our childern wiped away like a gossamer spider web.
