Wait till the first dust or sand storm covers all those mirrors.

Dear Art,

If you look to a more elaborate articles about this plant, you will see that the bad thing is that the electricity is about 20% more expensive than current prices.

However, this price is FIXED FOR 30 YEARS. Since, no fuel is used.

So, if you think that prices will be flat for 30 years and that CCS will not give additional costs, this is a bad investment. However, if you think that energy prices will raise with a modest 2%, than this is already good investment after 10 years. And the last 20 years, you have a gold mine. And after 30 years, you can probably replace the mirrors and do another 30 years.

So, this bad or good investment, depending on the prediction of prices. You are welcome to do your own prediction.

Lucas

This must really be a bad project financially. When the only money numbers are benefits you know the cost is astronomical. No mention of how much of a subsidy they will get - from either state or federal.

We sure slid into this socialism thing easily.

Dear Rolf,

Are you a fan of nuclear fusion energy? Because these argument are always coming from those people. They think that nuclear fusion is easier, than turning the mirrors down in case of sand storm or installing a cheap sprinkler installation.

CSP is a proven technology. The SEGS plants now exists for about 25 years. The begin was difficult, but 25 years gives a lot of experience.

Lucas

Rolf: Dust can be cleaned, part of O&M expenses is the regular and emergency cleaning of mirrors. Hail can be a risk if there is any at the chosen location, as well as the possibility of a storm smashing some or many mirrors. But this risk can be insured and the replacement of a % of mirrors can been factored in O&M expenses.

Lucas: Could you provide a link of those more elaborate articles? I have an interest on the topic.

Thanks

Without the nuclear accident indemnity provided by the US government, nuclear power plants wouldn't exist in the US. No private insurance company would touch that business with a 10km pole. This industry also gets plenty of other handouts from the feds. How's that for socialism?

With water being increasingly scarce in that part of the world, a nuke or coal plant might be difficult or even impossible to operate during the long, hot, dry summers when its power is needed most. Does anybody have information on how much water this CSP plant will require?

Is anyone not counting on at least a 2% increase in energy costs over the next 20-30 years? How about 5% to 15%? Doesn't matter what form of useable energy, take your pick. Unless your a sawyer on the beetle infested slopes of the Rocky Mountain West.
