Greenbiz is seemingly underwhelmed by a 4.2% reduction in emissions per unit of GDP. It's actually pretty good.

As per USA Today (1/31/08), and PC utterances notwithstanding, few Americans are actually doing something to reduce their carbon footprint. Even Al Gore was late moving beyond lecturing everyone else - and he wrote the book.

Ours is a nation that hasn't yet figured out that the Southwest is a desert, and can't support the population there. It hasn't figured out that New Orleans - already 10' below sea level and sinking - can't be salvaged. And were it not for the housing collapse, we'd still be buying condos on the beach in Miami. Americans expect to watch the movie about global warming on the big-screen TV, in their air conditioned house, with delivery pizza on call.

To George Messier:

Wow! Can you give us more pessimism towards Americans? Maybe in Texas or Georgia... We are at the beginning of a seachange of activism. People aren't going to change overnight. They just need the right advise and tools to get started. I'm excited about seeing more renewables coming online, more biofuels, that crazy seawater puimped into our deserts... One thing we are and thats survivors and innovators... Now, lets start educating and mandating some changes in water and energy consumption.

I agree. More resource and energy limitation is called for in these times of resource and energy scarcity. I know that we are way behind though comparatively with several other developed nations. More effort is needed by individuals working at companies to remind companies and coorporations to take a follow through position and put effort into cleaning up and economizing on waste and energy.

To Jihad Johnson:

Politicians promise things to garner votes. I'm not running.

Rather than a federal stimulus to "shop, shop, shop", use the money to rehabilitate run-down inner cities like Detroit, Buffalo, Philadelphia and Hartford. New mechanicals, insulation and appliances; rent/sell as appropriate. Efficiency first, right? Rehabilitate dormant industrial parks; stir in mass transit to link the two. Repeat elsewhere, but not in regions threatened by rising seas. Avoid carving up raw land for more of same. The $$ stays in the US, rather than going to OPEC & China.

End corn ethanol. Everything I read says the global population is still growing, the climate is changing, and food reserves are declining. Large-scale PV and geothermal for schools.
