Shaun,

The wind industry has made great strides since then in learning how to do assessments before deciding locations. Not only dramatically reducing the total number of birds killed, but specifically avoiding areas that have endangered birds or birds that due to hunting habits are particularly prone to windmill collisions, such as raptors looking for small prey on the ground. This location just happened to be a very bad spot chosen over 20 years ago when far less was known about the danger.

RhapsodyinGlue is right on. Altamont is a black eye for wind, but a dated black eye. The entire issue of bird kills is over now that the industry knows exactly what to look for and what to avoid.

And as for Shaun loving solar and hating wind, well go ahead and love that 45 cents per kWh compared to wind's average of 7 cents kWh. That's the reason wind makes up over 95% of new renewables satisfying utility RPS requirements.
