Ontario Approves a Pair of 10 MW Solar Projects

Published: September 11, 2007

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Pod Generating Group, a developer of utility-scale solar power generating facilities, yesterday announced the award of their first two Standard Offer Contracts with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA). The pair of 10 megawatt (MW) solar projects will be located in the city of Sault Ste. Marie in northern Ontario and will connect to local utility PUC distribution.

"Each of the two 10 MW facilities represents the largest renewable project that can be connected to a local distribution system within the OPA's Standard Offer Program guidelines,” said Brian Curran, CEO of PUC Distribution.

Pod Generating Group was awarded a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) under the OPA’s Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP) for each of the two 10 MW solar facilities. Together, the two facilities represent an investment of over CAD$100 million dollars and will be built, maintained and owned by Pod Generating Group.

Under RESOP, the company will receive a tariff of CAD$0.42 per kilowatt-hour of energy produced at the solar power plant. The two solar facilities will provide power for up to 7,000 Ontario homes and are scheduled to be operational by the end of 2008.
