From the Nevada desert to the roofs of Wal-Mart stores to the legendary plains of Spain, solar is entering a bold, bright new era. Each week, solar seems to be winning new enthusiasts like Forbes, new investors of all stripes, and new large-scale business users like Wal-Mart, Macy's and Kohl's.

Currently Photovoltaics is the right technology for decentralized utilization of solar energy, while the strength of Solar Thermal Power Plant (STPP) technology is centralized power generation. STPP technology is particularly efficient at higher solar radiation intensity. Therefore it offers very good options for development not only for the southwestern region of US, but also in many economically disadvantage region in the earth’s Sunbelt. Furthermore, Parabolic trough technology has know entered a phase of constant optimization .the operation coasts have dropped from originally 0.08 $/kW.hr to 0.03 $/kW.hr. By 2015 the power production cost will be comparable to those of medium load power plants using fossil fuels. STPP technology can provide the necessary amount of clean energy to achieve the targets for optimizing the consumption of fossil fuel in electrical power grid, minimizing the environmental impact, and climate stabilization. The waste heat of STPP can be used for seawater desalination as well as for electricity generation.
What does Forbes prove beyond the fact that it can't predict trends any better than AutoWeek.

Solar is the wave of the future and even Forbes eventually has to "predict" it.

You guys are really representing and providing informative information. I have been involved with trying to promote solar for ove 15 years. It great to see that I was not pipe dreaming. Back in the early days it was 99% R and D and you know what a black hole that can be. Took a heavy hit chasint the Sterling Engine and Solar connection with Bomin Solar back in the day. I see now some are making the connection.

Isn't it time that the clean air power systems especially solar and wind, develop a planned global network to have a future that can ensure healthy breathing for the entire mankind ?

While these developments are very encouraging, it is also time that a larger global view to develop solar and wind comined power plants are planed. Wherever feasible, all the other renewable systems like tidal power , wave energy and all such non-poluting power systems can also be grouped in coastal areas.UNEP and such agencies should be involed and co-ordinate all such activities to have a Global Clean Power Network.

I was very sorry to hear that Miasole was having trouble with their technology, even though thin film materials will be in short supply when they do get on line. The real solar revolution is still waiting for $1/watt technology - maybe dye-enhanced PV. When solar gets to the point where it's cheaper than grid power the real revolution will happen, and the "million solar rooftops" in California will only be the tip of the iceberg.
