"If you want to achieve the best efficiency, you need to consider both the voltage you can achieve and the current you can achieve. If you absorb a very broad range of wavelengths, that's going to sacrifice voltage. And if your absorption energy threshold is very high, you can achieve high voltage, but you'll sacrifice current. The idea is to find some balance."

There is also research on dye enhanced solar cells going on in New Zealand, which was covered in this e-zine some time ago. Their results were even more dramatic - solar cells at one-tenth the cost of silicon cells. One of the advantages of this technology is that it doesn't use rare materials, such indium and cadmium, like CIGS thin-film technology. Titanium dioxide is a very common material. What we need to realize is that when the cost of solar PV drops to a point where it is directly competitive with power from the grid, the demand will explode! And we need to have a technology that can accommodate 100X or even 1000X the present market.

Let's do the math: 1/2 the watts at 1/4 the price = 1/2 the cost in dollars per watts. Sounds good to me!

Christina Nelson, The Original Coffee Company

This is interesting. Good, color therapy in light and electricity? Very spiritual.

My usual question, what are the present ENERGY costs of producing both kinds of solar cells. and therefore the payback times, as well as useful lifetimes? This is the first kind of information needed to properly evaluate such products.

Dan Robinson
