"The additional expense is most definitely worth it because the minimization of metallization on the front side enables us to obtain reduced shading and thus increased energy production, which leads to a significant increase in efficiency."

-- Dr. Ralf Preu, Head of the PV Production Technology & Quality Assurance Department, Fraunhofer ISE

Good God!!! A half of a percent increase!! That IS quite significant. This is surely the end of fossil fuels.

Although any increase in efficiency is good news, a decrease in cost by a facter of 10 is really the only way to force the oil money interests out of the way. Think in terms of .8 to 1 dollar a watt, instad of 8 dollars. It's a great start now and should be done by those who can afford it, but for the average joe it just isn't there yet.

To put it into perspective....

If we increase the efficiency by 0.5% on a 1MW system that's an additional output of 5000W. At an installed cost of about $8.00 per watt that equates to an increased value of about $40,000.00 which in my opinion is significant.

Richard

If our government doesn't act to subsidize the costs of geo and PV systems to match kW costs, we're never going to see major system inplimentation. They must know something we do not.
