Approximately half of all sales made by U.S. manufacturers in 2006 were exports, signifying that Small Wind is still one of the few renewable energy technologies the U.S. dominates.

I have developed next generation wind energy designs (including their construction) that are considerably more effective than current, in terms of capx per KW, etc. jriam1945@aol.com

I live in a part of New Jersey where there is sufficient wind to power small turbines and generate enough electricity to offset some of my energy costs. There are a few problems: the existing US turbines are too expensive ($3000+ plus utility interfaces) and too noisy for suburban locations; there is no tax benefit or incentive to install a small turbine; and zoning laws are archaic and not wind-friendly. Solar has much more money and policy behind it even though NJ is not particularly known as a sunny place to live. The NJ Wind Working Group is trying to develop some model zoning language to permit turbines. And there's an English company that makes small, almost noiseless turbines. I think there's a potentially huge market for turbines that can be easily installed on single or multiple family dwelllings.

HIGH COST FOR THE SMALL WIND TURBINE IS DUE TO THE TOWER AND OTHER STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS. ANOTHER REASON FOR THE POOR GROWTH OF THIS SEGMENT IS THE LACK OF ADEQUATE WIND RESOURCE IN MOST OF THE CITIES AND TOWNS. TALL BUILDINGS AND OTHER OBSTRUCTIONS RESTRAIN THE WIND SPEEDS AND HENCE IT IS NECESSSARY TO USE TALL TOWERS.

HOWEVER EVEN IN IDENTIFIED WINDY LOCATIONS, DEVELOPMENT OF WIND TURBINES IN THE LOWER CAPACITY SEGMENT IS BEING NEGLECTED BY ESTABLISHED MANUFACTURERS. 100 kW IS CLASSIFIED AS A SMALL WIND TURBINE AND IT MAY BE COST EFFECTIVE AND AFFORDABLE BY SMALL INVESTORS IF IT IS INSTALLED IN WINDY AREAS.

IN INDIA, 225/250 kW WIND TURBINES INSTALLED IN THE EARLY 90'S CONTINUE TO WORK SATISFACTORILY AND THERE IS VERY LITTLE 'REPOWERING' ACTIVITY. 'POWERFUL SIMPLICITY' IS ONE OF THE MAJOR REASONS FOR THE POPULARITY.

IF SOMEONE COULD JUST CUT DOWN THE MANUFACTIRING COST OF SMALL WIND GENERATORS IT COULD BE A BOON TO PEOPLE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES LIKE INDIA WHERE THERE IS A LOT OF ELECTRICITY SHORTAGE. PEOPLE ARE READY TO USE WIND POWERAND OTHER RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMSLIKE SOLAR BUT THEIR PURCHASING CAPACITY IS VERY LIMITED.

REGARDS

DIVYA VARSHNEI

I live in India we can afford to buy the small wind turbines if they were available locally at reasonable cost. there is no manufacturer in India and there is lots of hassle getting one Imported from abroad, local Importers of PV system even refuses to sell individual PV cells locally, govt should Jump into the forum and open retail shops and help in cutting the cost.
