"Continuation of the tremendous growth we've seen in wind energy is not without its challenges. Timely extension of the renewable energy production tax credit along with addressing ongoing transmission and interconnection challenges is vital to our ability to meet these goals and the long-term viability of the wind generation industry."

-- Mitch Davidson, FPL Energy, president

Note the need for taxpayer and customer subsidies for FPL's wind power projects. 10,000 new MW almost doubles total US wind power capacity. Also note EIA 2007 forecast that wind will account for less than 1% of electric energy fuel in 2030.

Sort of shows what the former administration's policy was (drill baby drill) - the US reached 1% from wind in 2008 (42,356 out of 4,121,053 GWh total for a rolling 12 month period ending October, 2008, just over 1% of total), and there is no going back. http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/epm/table1_1_a.html and http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/epm/table1_1.html

The subsidies are not actually subsidies if you look at them from the larger point of view - with wind and solar you pay up front for all the energy you get for the next 20 years, and the net result 20 years later is that your electric rate is a small fraction of what it would have been without the investment in wind and solar. With non-renewable resources you pay as you go, until they run out. By not burning coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear, we can reduce the price of electricity, and make the earth a better place.

Welcome to the solar age. It just gets a little windy first, as wind is cheaper in the short run than solar, but solar is cheaper in the long run, and there is much more of it, as well.
