Check out the S.F. Chronicle article on click-through fraud. It could be much higher than 15%

http://tinyurl.com/2ud3mm

Another pitfall of click-through advertising is that your competitors can cost you a bunch of money if they maliciously click your ads.

"The number of people who go to site and become customers is the only way to measure the effectiveness of a pay-per-click campaign." As you touch on later, this is not entirely true. Your ad campaign can be effective without resulting in customers. For example, if your web site is lame, a click-through is not going to result in a customer, even if the customer is a good prospect.

Great, bankrupted by a group of middle schoolers doing a team project!

There are state organizations, professional associations, and other COCommerce groups that will list you for free or for the price of your membership; and newspapers now do the same for a fixed fee or free.

Nice idea...if it could find "qualified" shoppers!

Good points, both of which are addressed by effective ad tracking. If I know how many sales come from pay per click ads and the value of these sales then there is an easy value proposition.
For example:
My Average Sale is $100.00
Net Profit on the Sale is $50.00
Cost per click is $1.00
With effective tracking, I will know exactly how many people purchase from the ad. If 10% buy, then the cost of a sale is $10.00. Even if the other 90% are all click fraud, it's still an easy proposition to evaluate.
Set a budget, watch the results, and you know exactly if it's a good idea.
That's why I started the article with "golden opportunity or waste of money..."

Has anyone out there heard about WideCircles.com. It seems like a way better service then wasting money on PPC. Apparently they are using refering websites ( forums, blogs, wiki, etc. ) and have a viral word of mouth distributed approach to it. My friend told me he got around 100 visits from single post which cost him $0.40c. I am going to give them a try today . In case you are intrested here is it. http://widecircles.com?s=imt1

Did anyone out there give a try to Wide Circles or WideCircles. They are new word of mouth advertising platform, apparently they can push massive amount of messages through social network mediums like forums, blogs, wiki's and so on. They say that they only bill for posts active for minimum of 5 days and price seems pretty affordable. I am going to give Wide Circles aka WideCircles a try since I am tired of PPC fraud. http://widecircles.com
