Frankfurt's First Solar-Cell Plant to Start Production This Week

Frankfurt, Germany [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] On April 19, 2007, Odersun AG will be opening its first solar-cell plant in Frankfurt (Oder). Called "Sun One," the plant will house up to 60 employees working four shifts to produce around 6,000 kilometers of solar tapes annually.

The thin-film solar modules on copper tape can be produced for use in cells of all sizes and quality for facades and roofs, solar power stations and designer bags with an integrated "power socket" -- all without requiring special complicated or expensive silicon technology.
Odersun AG's thin film solar technology has been developed entirely in Frankfurt (Oder) over the past 14 years. "We are a real Brandenburg success story," said Ramin Lavae Mokhtari, CCE of Odersun AG. "With our patented, globally innovative technology and our flexible production process we offer tailor-made, economic solutions." Up to now, Odersun AG has invested 8.5 million Euros [US$11.5 million] in the project. The main equity providers are Doughty Hanson Technology Ventures from London and Advanced Technology and Materials (AT&M) from Peking. The state of Brandenburg is assisting Odersun AG with 3.5 million Euros [US$4.7 million] financial aid.

Apparently, this type of thin film copper solar module is well suited for incorporating solar capabilities into buildings for next generation structures or converting older buildings to solar. 6,000 Km of solar tapes/year should be able to help meet the demand. An integrated "power socket" sounds good for any house or business.
