Sharp Donates Solar Systems to New Orleans Community

In conjunction with its annual customer conference, Sharp is bringing the power of solar energy to New Orleans by donating solar systems to members of the New Orleans community.

Sharp worked with several local organizations and businesses, including the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association, The Alliance for Affordable Energy, Williams Architects and the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, to select 10 deserving local residents who will have a donated solar system installed on their houses. The solar systems, which will be installed on February 28 and March 1 by authorized dealers, will supply these homes with a lifetime of free, clean energy. Ron Kenedi, Vice President of Sharp Solar Energy Solutions Group, will be on hand on March 3 in New Orleans at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to honor Sharp's donation. New Orleans stands to benefit from energy-producing housing that could save thousands of dollars on operating costs for financially strapped homeowners, jump-start a new industry, build a much needed renewable energy infrastructure and reduce the emissions that cause global warming.

Every industry pools its money to promote its interest. What is the solar industry doing? Examples like the one in this gesture do so much more to promote an industry than all the media buys in the world can do. I suggested to one of the organizations 4 years ago to supply the people of Iraq with solar installations and no one was interested. Now that it has deteriorated into chaos that's not possible but back then when they really needed just enough power to run a fan and a refrigerator we could've started something good but this industry has no farsight just like America in general. Everything is calculated on the short term and we're constantly paying now for that short term thinking of the past. We're doomed if we don't change that way of looking at things.

You people are magnificent! I know what it means to miss New Orleans, but I can only imagine what it would be like to have power before, during and after a hurricane. Be sure to bolt those babies down tight so they don't blow away.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Why is everyone knocking CitizenRe then? They will be doing this throughout the United States!

Solar panels have about the same flight characteristics as mobile homes in a hurricane. Even the best installers won't guarantee installation for category 2 or above storms. A second point; the deserving poor are just that, poor. Who will maintain or repair these systems. Solar power is still not as trouble free as your refrigerator or water heater. Poor people may not be the best recipiants of these systems. For now let's just provide help when we can and wait for the technology that will allow us to paint the solar system on the roof and walls of the poor.

That's great. I would like to see much more solar power in use and who could benefit from it better than the people of New Orleans? (Maybe the people in Iraq)

Now this is a worthy effort to support!

Way to go Sharp!
To the author: Is there a way to donate money for this project?
