"This plant will be a first step toward allowing Ma'alaea Power Plant, by far the largest electric plant on Maui, to generate all its electricity without fossil fuels. We are now examining our ability to convert all our generators at Ma'alaea that currently use oil-based diesel to biodiesel, ideally from locally grown crops."

Keep me posted with an RSS feed. The higher use of biodiesel is to power vehicles. Electric plants can use much lower quality petro fuel whereas diesel vehicles need the high quality which ASTM D 6751 provides. What consideration has been given to production of ehtanol needed to process the bio oil feedstock?

The direction is positive, but what exactly does the State need to do to ensure locally grown crops are encouraged and preferred over imported palm oil from cheaper developing countries? What are the price points that local farmers need to target to guarantee the purchase of their fuel crops?
