The good news is that it's easy to find companies today that you can have confidence in -- companies that meet certain business standards, have experience, and do quality work.

The information and views expressed in this article are those of the author and not necessarily those of RenewableEnergyWorld.com or the companies that advertise on its Web site and other publications.

The company's are many and any one with a good google keyword search would come up with the most extensive list found below:

http://solarbuzz.com/solarindex/expo.htm

However, if one tries to compare products in terms of quality, not mutch that you can find in a simple list. The reason is that they are several factors to consider (economics, warranty, footprint of panels, efficiency).

Either way, if your are looking for installer in Bay-Area, California or even to just buy your solar products for a do-it-yourself project, come visit us at:

Inter-Island Solar Supply has been around since the 1975, supplying the Hawaiian Islands with solar hot water and electricity, as well as wind, hydro and any other type of renewable you can think of. They are the main supplier of off-grid systems to homes in the Islands of Kauai, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii. They are onw by the Solaray Corp. which also owns SunEarth Inc., established in California in 1978, manufactures industry standard solar water heating collectors and systems for residential and commercial applications. If thats not established enough for you I guess you could try to purchase from Nasa's old distributors from the 1960's.....

One of the top companies in Colorado is Sun Electric Systems: http://www.sunelectricsystems.com/. They are based in the Denver/Boulder area and have been doing projects of all sizes all around the state for 25 years, both on and off-grid. I've been researching solar PV installers/designers in the area for some time, and they seem to have better prices and install better quality systems than most others in the area.

Now that renewable energy and going green are reaching all time levels of popularity we need to get the word and the knowledge and the information and the contacts out there. Why didn't REC or Real Goods Solar or BP or The Solar Energy Company or Citizenre or any of the players advertise during the superbowl or just advertise in general on tv or in magazines or in anyway that the typical American might actually become interested.
It is time to go mainstream everyone, and Ken, as a respected figure in the field you need to help solar along.

I think an easily accessible table or graph or just a listing of everyone that he (or somone) can come up would be helpful. I understand about not mentioning just 2 or 3 in a short article, but lack of knowledge and readily available resources, and also advertising and marketing has been a major problem with the spread and diffusion of PV and solar thermal. The only place I ever see an ad is on a renewable energy or green website and the kind of people that visit those sites don't need much more convincing and are the ones that are going out of there way to find retailers, installers, manufacturers, etc.

I'm going to have to recommend Real Goods Solar. Real Goods is the oldest and most well established solar installer in the US. Back in 1978 Real Goods sold the first retail solar panel in the world. They've solarized over 60,000 homes and have installers throughout Colorado and California.

So as an industry expert, couldn't Ken have provided a table listing companies with years in business, sales volume, diversity, warranty, customer satisfaction, etc., without specifically endorsing one or the other company? This would have been useful information for those of us who are not so expert and may not have access to such information.

Come ON, people...!! For this man to list specific companies would imply an "endorsement" of same. Somebody's feelings will always be hurt in cases like this, and he would 'shut down' otherwise valuable sources of continuing information. Cut Ken a little slack here, and do your damn homework yourself !! The question itself gave no 'specifics'. How does one define a "top company" ?? Is it by "total years in business" ? Is it by "total sales volume" ? Is it by "market penetration" or "diversity of Product line" ?? Is it by "technical superiority" compared with competitor's products ? Is it by "warranty period and guaranteed power output for 'X' years" ? Is it by "certifiability by state or local licensing/zoning authorities". Or maybe "all of the above" ? You need to give this poor guy who's trying to be helpful here a bit more than the 'raspberries'. Geoff Steele - Arlington, VA

Mr. Scheinkopf, you would make a great politician, your reply to the question was not even remotely close to an answer. I would like to know the real answer as we are a manufacturer of solar related products in Colorado and these solar integrators would love our product lines. You forgot to mention us!! www.Rougue-engr.com

If you live in California or Colorado and you are interested in a residential, commerical or municipal grid tie solar electric system I recommend you look up REC Solar. They are an excellent intergrator with multiple product offerings.

The question contributor asked a straightforward question. RE should not have bothered offering this non-responsive "answer".

At the very least, he could have mentioned the "so called" old timers. On the whole, a cop out. I understand the reluctance to play favorites to cya, but enough already.

I also agree. I do not see a single company named.

The reference to websites is good, bust still does not answer the original question.

I am interested in the answer to the question and I am sorry Mr Shienkopf but in my view this is not an answer to the question.

It does not even attempt to answer the question. Which in my reading of it is about the "Initial Design", "Manufacturing" for "wholesale" product.

The questioner did not even come close to asking about installation or local dealers...

Note to the Editor: This is the first time I am reading this column, but if it is indicative of the way questions are "answered" it will also be the last.

Wow. Great discussion here. This was not a right or wrong-type of question, and I interpreted "top" companies to be the best, not the biggest. I just feel my job in telling you the best companies is to tell you how you can find this out, since the best for one reader might not be the best for another. If you do the homework I suggest, you will find the information on training and certification, on products they offer and services they sell. I know most of the companies mentioned in reader comments and think there are very good ones here, but I really think you need to do your research to determine the best for your location, your family's needs, your energy usage. Sorry to disappoint some of you, but the discussion brought out lots of good ideas that will help further that objective. It is a very positive sign that so many readers are that interested in our technologies today. I just think that only you can determine the best manufacturer or installer for your needs.

While the difficulties in naming the top manufacturers and system integrators are spelled out well in the reader comments, a source of qualified installers was glaringly absent in Mr. Sheinkopf's comments. The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP.org) certifies solar electric and solar thermal (and soon wind)installers, requiring a combination of education and experience, succesful completion of comprehensive testing, adherence to a code of ethics, continuing education, and regular re-certification.

I don't think there are any that manufacture and install. It would be kind of a conflict for them.
There are many installers in every state. Web search engines can usually find installers for residential and commercial applications.

If solar is a revolution, the irate nature of some of the posts explains why revolutions tend to eat their young.

Note to those who have responded with attacks on Kenneth Sheinkopf: Mr. Sheinkopf is one of the good guys! He is trying to help! The kind of info you seek is available on the websites he suggested! Keep your eyes on the ball (and get over yourselves)!!

this hot discussion suggests to me that a Citizenre model is the only way solar is going to go mainstream any time soon, and we need solar to go mainstream now. all the choices and changes. TOO complicated for the solar-savvy in this discussion, so WAY too complicated for busy people who don't know inverter from intertie and don't WANT to, but just want to Go Solar.

I have visited many of the websites that were cited by previous posters. I will just add one more to the list of many useful websites.

http://www.affordable-solar.com/

Additionally, I would like to ask a provacative question. If I told you there was a quiet energy revolution, would you oppose or support it?
