"Running peanut biodiesel cleans residue from diesel engines. This can be good and bad, because the particles tend to clog up the filter on an engine. After cleaning the filters a few times, peanut biodiesel actually runs much cleaner than diesel."

-- Daniel Geller, University of Georgia, research engineer

We need to look at this stuff, so I am not criticizing the researchers; but when you consider the magnitude of the subsidies, it should be abundantly clear that increased efficiency is the way to go. We are using far more energy in North America than was the case even 20 years ago, when we were already wasting tons. And we now emit about twice as much CO2 per capita as Germany and the UK and almost 3 times as much as France (all highly industrialized economies, whose emissions are actually going down, while ours continue to rise). Clearly the potential from taking efficiency / conservation seriously is enormous. And here, we are not talking about replacing costly fossil fuel with even more costly alternatives; we are talking about using/spending less, period!

I don't know how much our government spends on crop subsidies any more. The idea that a cash crop (peanuts), well suited to biodiesel production, could be grown on land we are PAYING people not to cultivate is more than a little infuriating. The investment capital used to develop production and distribution facilities, an increase in the number of admittedly low paying agricultural jobs (but also well related to our failures in the classroom) should really be a shot in the arm to our confused economy. It must be feasible at some point, as Germany nearly drove us to our knees with our own peanut oil in WWII.
