Electric Co-op Endorses Renewable Energy for 25% of U.S. Needs by 2025

Montrose, Colorado [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) has endorsed the "25x'25 Initiative," a growing national association of organizations, businesses and political leaders that believe that 25 percent of the energy consumed in the U.S. should be met by renewable energy gleaned from America's farms, forests and ranches by 2025.

To date, 220 organizations, 21 U.S. Senators, 52 Congressmen, and 13 Governors have endorsed the 25x'25 Initiative.

"We believe the 25x'25 goal is attainable within our own service territory; we believe it's attainable throughout rural America, which is served by electric cooperatives such as DMEA," said Dan McClendon, General Manager of DMEA, which may well be the first electric cooperative in the nation to endorse the national 25x'25 Initiative.

"We're proud to take a leadership role in this important movement that will improve our nation's economy, environment and national security." 25x'25 is supported financially by the Energy Future Coalition, a nonpartisan public policy initiative funded by foundations.

The original goal of 25x'25, first envisioned by a group of volunteer farm leaders, quickly gained the support of a broad cross-section of the agriculture and forestry communities. Currently leaders from business, labor, conservation and religious groups are joining this alliance: To date, 220 organizations, 21 U.S. Senators, 52 Congressmen, and 13 Governors have endorsed 25x'25.

It is very encouraging that Delta Montrose endorses 25x25. Ironically, Montrose is a Tri State Cooperative. Tri State Generation and Transmission has a generation plan that consists of constructing three new pulverized coal powered power plants at a cost of 5 billion dollars. This financially and environmentally risky venture will put every man woman and child in Tri State cooperatives in debt 5000 dollars. Tri State ignores renewables, distributed generation and energy efficiency in its load projections. You would never know any of this reading the Montrose web site. Coop board members are not serving their members well signing onto Tri State's plan. They should say Tri State, try again!

How about .25% now (of the US budget) or about 4 or 5 billion dollars right now put towards Solar cell & energy storage R&D.
