Australia to Build 232-MW Wind Farm

Victoria, Australia [PhysOrg.com] The Planning Minister, Rob Hulls, today gave the green light to building Australia's most powerful wind farm at Mt Gellibrand, near Colac, with the capacity to power 133,450 homes a year. Mr Hulls said issuing the planning permit was another important step towards achieving the Bracks Government's Victorian Renewable Energy Target (VRET), which commits energy retailers to buying 10 per cent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2016.

For the past few months, I thought that Australia had gone back on its promise several years ago to support wind farm development. Now they seem to be reverting to their original plan but in a somewhat limited way.

Not exactly cheap $1638/kW and if avearge capacity factor is 50%(which is high) the actual cost would be more than $3200/kW. Capturing the full capacity by storing wind energy using Pumped Hydro or Compressed air facilites, woud truly bring the full benefit of Wind Energy.
Credits for low emissions--but let's not forget that the wind now delivered as electricity will add to Thermal Pollution.

According to a 1998 article in the New York Times, ".......for every $2,000 spent, a utility could replace one kw from coal with one kw from a reactor........"

I do not know of any estimates of the cost in todays deflated dollars, although someone working in the industry would probably know where to find such information.

Isn't the whole idea behind using Renewable Energy to avoid CO2 emissions, and thus to avoid adding to atmospheric heating?
