I think that if our leaders don't get really serious about developing alternate sources of energy for our country, the US will be in for a great surprise. If the temporary closing of the pipline sends shock waves through our economy, then any substantial cut in oil from OPEC or other foreign sources will be an earthquake.

We are presently an oil dependent nation and that is our weakness. The sooner we solve the energy problem the better because it is an accident waiting to happen. Congress should wake up because without adequate oil, there will be only a shell of a nation left to run and to tax.

During WWII, we used ration cards for some essentials. Congress may soon have to begin planning along these lines for fuel.

The US Military needs to invest more in "Solar Water Heaters" for the Eco-Sensitive regions of Micronesia, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Diago Garcia.

A good friend gave me a bumper sticker that states:
"Renewable Energy IS Homeland Security". That says it all. We will soon be in the time of living with the consequences of our actions or lack of action. Our leaders in government must see this and support renewable energy programs before it is too late.

True cost of oil

Figure in the military cost of protecting the sources of oil worldwide and maybe a barrel of oil really cost $7500 a barrel not $74. Not to mention the lives lost .

Renewable energy isn't going to do much for the navy, which must use most of the oil mentioned. As bad as nuclear is, its the only real choice for ships that otherwise would be burning 50,000 tons of fuel oil or more a month. What better place than in a military vessel (or base) is there to use plutonium from recycled fuel rods and decommissioned weapons? If its not safe with thousands of military personnel around, its definately not safe in cooling ponds outside landside reactors.
