These type of "geothermal heat pumps" have been around for years. Several major heat pump manufacturers build such units. It's obvious that having a near 50-60 degree exchange medium will result in large savings for the HVAC system. Such heat pump systems have been found practical even in high latitiudes, like Minnesota, where conventional heat pumps have never been of any use. Geothermal heat pumps are the one of the easiest and most consistent ways to reduce electrical need. Where possible, every new single family home should have such a system, which are very simple, practical and long lasting. The major additional cost is the digging of a 6 foot trench for about 500 feet to entomb the
heat exchange line, containing the exchange fluid. It's a nobrainer to build.
