"Wind farms are an important part of our ongoing efforts to make the United States more energy independent, which is why the FAA needs to immediately clarify its position so that investors feel comfortable putting their money into these projects and construction crews can get to work."

-- U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL)

some of the phenomenon of wind farm impact on radar are valid ....

however ....

.... if the defence impact was really that serious, then how come European countries, all side by side and warring for centuries .... are not suspending wind farm development due to the impact on their defence radars ?

..... and with similar population densities, number of airports and flight movements, ..... how come they are not suspending wind farm development due to the impact on their air traffic control radars ?

.... Paradox

We finally have action on the part of some of our senators. All along I had thought that they were half dead with regards to wind development. I am happy to say that I was mistaken; we do have leaders worthy of recognition.

Now, let us see if the FAA can get off its duff and do its job!!!!!! We need answers and they should have been given months ago instead of waiting around for blackouts and wars. They get paid, don't they???

If our radar systems are not capable of differentiating between a wind turbine tower and an aircraft or other moving target then we have much to be worried about.

There are thousands of windmills in the midwest for pumping water and evidently these are not a problem for radar. So where is the problem with wind turbine towers? The argument that wind turbine towers are a threat to our national security is ludicrous. A much greater threat is our energy appetite for foreign oil.

I say if the FAA is not willing to help they need to be removed from our tax dollars budget. They are the ones in control of the radar facilities, they are the ones who should know what is needed to make wind power more radar friendly.

Waiting until the power goes out and doesn't come back on seems to be the "normal thing" for the government to do lately instead of investing in alternative energy.

No congressional study is needed or wanted!
FAA must be ordered to cooperate with the Wind power industry to get it to work the way they want and they must use something to scare the animals away from these things too.
A stationary object that twirls in the wind should be a give me to a radar operator it is the wind turbine and a no fly zone with in 1 . 5 miles of the wind turbine should be more than adequate to Protect America.

The days of plug in hybrids are getting nearer. When they arrive - wind farms and solar electric panels will offset imported oil.

Those turbines that are being blocked by the DOD could generate power for cars in the near future.

Poiticians have always played along with the mixed up between electricity and oil and natural gas. I would guess because the media does it and the public is ignorant.

One day we energy geeks really need to set them straight.

Notice that Sen Durbin claims that events in the Middle East demand work on alternative energies.
While that may be true, the energy that comes
from the Middle East has nothing whatsoever to do with electrical power generation that the wind farms provide. Durbin is apparently not real bright
when it comes to alternative energies. He just knows that it's hurting HIS constituent companies
and farmers.

I guess everyone notices immediately that all of these Senators are from high resource wind states.
I'd say they have a vested interest in wind power .
Why are wind turbines any different than tall buildings when it comes to radar? The fact that their blade is moving , apparently. Can't wind turbines be fitted with a plane transponder that
will identify themselves as turbines to the radar
operator ? I really don't see what the big problem is. Did anyone ever claim there WAS a
problem before the Senate placed that provision
in a recent law that required a study be done?

Kerry, in 2004, 3% of electrical generation in the US is produced directly from fuel oil, natural gas (which is also increasingly imported) was over 18%.

Boyd. I do not think we have any intention of dismantling the FAA. We just want them to pay attention to the question at hand which is to determine the validity of the supposed harmful interference produced on radar by wind turbines. We want the FAA to do the job it is supposed to do in accordance with safe wind energy development of our nation which has been long overdue.

If there is a problem, let us recognize it and fix it. Then we can move along. However we must await the FAA studies which have not been forthcoming in a timely fashon.

Kerry et al,

I believe the senators simply feel that alternative energy is 30 years overdue and ANY progress is relevant to reduction of dependence on foreign supplies.

Homeland Security is simply blocking challenges to the status quo and the hundreds of billions they represent.

But, can we wait until my daughter flies home from study abroad to dismantle the FAA? ;-)

This road block was created in the back rooms of congress to stop the Cape Wind project in Nantucket Sound . It seem that two congress men from Massachusetts involed with this. Matter of fact it has the smell of Ted Kennedys alcoholic breath to it.

Has anyone every known the government to do anything on time? Why should the FAA be any different. I believe it is the administration thwarting the efforts for alternative energy as this admininstration's name is BIG OIL.

Why can't the turbines be painted with a special paint identifying them as wind machines? Look at our vehicles in Iraq. They have special paint which identifies the vehicles on radar.

Even in these overheated (literally - it will go 100+/- degrees again today in DC, the bottom line rules: wind power is an industry that has not yet been co-opted by the energy industry, and until it is, wind power will continue to be thwarted.

NO BRAINER -- *WIND POWER RENEWABLE *OIL-GAS = SOLDIERS LIVES LOST OR OURS - NOT FREE - NOT RENEWABLE - NOT CLEAN - MORE TERRORISM - OIL SPILLS - TANKER ACCIDENTS - BEACHES DESCIMATED - GROUND WATER POLLUTED - GLOBAL ENVIROMENTAL DISASTER - GLOBAL WARMING AND MUCH MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
